Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has extended Dr Mteto Nyati’s tenure as Eskom board chairperson, while demanding a new long-term strategy to transform the power utility beyond its current generation recovery programme.

Nyati will continue to lead the board as Eskom moves into what Ramokgopa has described as its next phase, with the utility expected to secure long-term energy supply, strengthen its finances, expand the electricity grid and improve services to customers.

A R16 million security tender at Blouberg Local Municipality has been plunged into a fraud and corruption investigation after the police elite, the Hawks, allegedly uncovered firearm details belonging to rival security companies and fraudulent certificates in the winning bidder’s tender documents.

Three suspects, aged between 37 and 57, were arrested in Polokwane on Wednesday as investigators moved against those allegedly linked to the multimillion-rand contract.

Former Colombian president and 2016 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Juan Manuel Santos is set to bring a difficult question about conflict, human rights and global responsibility to Cape Town when he delivers the 24th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in November.
