South Africa has one police officer for every 427 residents, a policing ratio that has come under renewed scrutiny as Parliament demands answers over the country’s response to gender-based violence (GBV).
The alarming ratio has been highlighted by Standing Committee on Appropriations chairperson Dr Mmusi Maimane on Tuesday, following the discovery of the bodies of nine women in Kempton Park and other parts of Ekurhuleni.

The municipal manager of Blouberg Local Municipality in Limpopo, Refilwe Jonas Ramothwala, has joined the directors of a security company on the dock, facing criminal charges over a controversial tender that allegedly resulted in about R11 million being paid to the company over three years.
Ramothwala, 57, appeared in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Friday alongside BBT Security Services directors Sello Herlot Mongalo, 37, and Ngoako Nicolas Thoka, 39, following their arrests by the Hawks on Wednesday.

Low contraceptive uptake among women of reproductive age continues to contribute to unintended pregnancies in Gauteng, with the provincial health department reporting that fewer than a third of eligible women accessed contraceptive services during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.
